Empty Bowls

On Monday, April 2 at Hamline University we will be holding our annual Empty Bowls fundraiser and awareness event. I’m making soup – and still trying to decide what kind of soup! The weather seems to be having trouble making up its mind whether I should do a cold or hot soup. Hmmm …

Hope to see you there! (I’ll be there between 12 and 2, in part to help staff the display table for the Midway Saint Paul Local Foods Hub)

World Water Day

When you are interested in food, you have to consider water. This is a great photo essay on the state of water around the world on World Water Day 2012. This draws attention to the agricultural implications of drought and pollution, as well as all of the other implications for our planet. So – I am posting this and dedicating it to my students from J-term, who learned to think about water in so many new ways.

Animation

Have you seen the text-to-animation ads with the cute robots? I really wanted to try that – and finally jumped in a couple of weeks ago. Here’s my first one – an introduction to searching for marketing research information in our library at Hamline. With a shout-out to our business reference librarian Amy Sheehan. Check out the video.

I know this is supposed to be about teaching …

… but today is the first day of Spring Break! It’s in the upper 70’s here in the Land of Lakes, and we are attacking our yard. This activity is in service of teaching and feeding though – we’re getting ready to garden, and it’s all about food crops. My teaching (and thinking) about food all starts with “where’s it from” – and while wild is great, cultivating our own is fantastic too. I expect to be starting baby lettuces soon, and hope to have fabulous yellow tomatoes (my favorite for making salsa) by August. Or, with the weather we’re having, maybe by June.

Hello World!

You may be asking – why “teachonefeedone”? The idea is from a class I taught in January, about the political economy of food. One of the things we did (23 students + moi!) was to cook (fabulous food!) together. Not only did we increase our cooking skills, but we also enjoyed the honor of sharing our food – with residents of the dorm who shared their student lounge with us for a kitchen, with other faculty and staff members of Hamline University, and with roommates, friends and family who got to partake in the bounty when our enthusiasm resulted in mass quantities of food we could not eat during our class time. So – I hope that as I “teach one” person to cook that I also inspire them to “feed one” other person – touching two lives at once. And on it goes.
